The Amal Center for Women

Before making the climb up the tallest mountain in Northern Africa, our journey started off lending a hand in the beautiful city of Marrakech, just outside the capital of Morocco. The nonprofit that we worked with was called the Amal Women's Center.

The Amal Women’s Center is dedicated to the empowerment of disadvantaged women through culinary skills and training. We visited this nonprofit to better understand how women moved forward in a society that was not only dictated by men, but dictated by a religion that gave men the ability to determine how women live in society.

The Amal Women's Center was more than welcoming for our request to interview them on how they found hope and beauty in their world where their rights are primarily determined by their gender as opposed to their ability to contribute to their community.

We spent our day helping the staff garden and clean up their main headquarters for a guest that would arrive to take cooking classes.

During that time, we learned how the staff built such a loving community. One thing we discovered that made this women's center so valuable was that it brought people together within the community that are in need of second chances. The women at the Amal Women’s Center have been abandoned by their spouses, households, and even society.

The Amal Women's Center is a place that brings hope to these women, as well as women with disabilities and those looking to feel empowered. It is not just the #MeToo movement that pushes them forward, it is understanding that they may not be able to change the religion on which their country was built, but they do have the ability to inspire both men and women to recognize that we are all human.
